What Is a Tirth Yatra?
The Sanskrit word tirtha means a sacred place, and yatra means a journey. A tirth yatra is therefore a pilgrimage to a holy site, such as a temple, a river confluence or a sacred city. For centuries, Hindu pilgrims have made these journeys for darshan, for prayer and rituals for their families and ancestors, and for spiritual merit.

Kashi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya
Three of the most revered cities of Uttar Pradesh can be combined in one journey. See our Varanasi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya pages for the temples, ghats and rituals of each city.
Panch Kedar and Panch Prayag
For pilgrims who want to go deeper into Uttarakhand, the Panch Kedar Yatra visits five Shiva shrines, including Tungnath. The Panch Prayag Yatra follows the five sacred river confluences of the Alaknanda.

Planning a Spiritual Yatra in India
A spiritual yatra is more than a holiday. It often means early mornings, long queues for darshan and, in the Himalayas, high altitude and changing weather. A few decisions early on make the journey much easier:
- Choose the season. The Char Dham temples usually open around April or May and close around October or November. Exact dates are announced each year. See the best time for Char Dham Yatra.
- Check your health. Kedarnath and Yamunotri involve an uphill trek at high altitude. Elderly pilgrims and anyone with a medical condition should see a doctor before travelling.
- Allow enough days. Mountain roads are slow, and landslides or weather can cause delays. Avoid planning tight connections on the way home.
- Check the registration rules. The Uttarakhand government has required pilgrims to register for the Char Dham Yatra, so check the current rules before you travel.
