Puri, on the coast of Odisha, is one of the four dhams of India. Its Jagannath Temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, who is worshipped here with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra.

What to See on a Puri Yatra

Jagannath Temple: this great temple is one of the holiest sites in Vaishnavism. Entry to the inner temple is restricted to Hindus, so non-Hindu visitors should check the rules in advance.

Mahaprasad: food offered to Lord Jagannath is shared as Mahaprasad, and is sold at the Ananda Bazar inside the temple complex.

Rath Yatra: during this famous festival, usually in June or July, the deities are taken through Puri in giant wooden chariots.

Konark Sun Temple: this UNESCO World Heritage Site is about 35 km from Puri and is often added to the journey.

How to Reach Puri

Bhubaneswar is the nearest airport, about 60 km away. Puri also has its own railway station with trains from many parts of India.

Best Time to Visit

October to March is usually the most pleasant time. If you plan to attend the Rath Yatra, book your stay well in advance, as Puri becomes extremely crowded.
